¿Cuándo Asumimos la Tecnología?
Hace un par de años, fui a pagar las contribuciones de mi casa a las oficinas de la Tesorería en Santiago, para lo que necesitaba un recibo que luego podía pagar de manera expedita en cualquier banco. Había una fila de al menos 80 personas esperando y sólo dos personas atendiendo, lo que (según un cálculo rápido) me iba a tomar unas 3 horas ... que en ese minuto no tenía. Así que pregunté en el mesón de informaciones si era el único lugar en el que se podía hacer el trámite:
- Bueno, puede ir a ____ (reemplace aquí un lugar realmente lejano) ... o puede hacerlo con el "cajero automático".
- ¿...?
- Ese chiquitito que está ahí... mete su rut y le sale el papelito. >>
Había sólo tres personas en esa fila, y la primera era una señora con cara de duda mirando el aparato. Pensé que debía estar malo, porque si no ¿porqué estaba vacío?. Así que me puse a mirar a la señora ... que miraba la pantalla con una cara que era mezcla de verguenza, ansiedad y ganas de romperle la crisma a alguien. Presionó la pantalla (era una touch-screen) y apareció un teclado numérico en la pantalla, y un mensaje que pedía ingresar el RUT. Al ver algo que parecía una tecla, la señora se animó y empezó a presionar la pantalla con tanta fuerza, que primero la pantallita crujía con un "crackk crackk" que daba nervios, y luego el cajero comenzó a balancearse de atrás hacia adelante. El problema empezó realmente cuando presionaba una tecla y parecía como si se presionara la de la derecha ... y esto era consistente con todas las teclas.
Eran las 13:50 (a punto de cerrar los bancos), y luego de 5 minutos de enojo y de crujidos, la señora se da vuelta y me dice:
- Oiga, ¿¡¿usted sabe cómo funciona esto... mePodríaAyudarPorrrFavorrrr?!? - y se sonrió con las puras cejas.
Desde hace muchos años me pregunto qué es necesario para que la tecnología sea asumida de manera natural entre las personas "comunes y corrientes". Es decir, había en ese momento 80 personas que preferían esperar 3 horas antes que verse enfrentados a un aparato (que entre paréntesis, tenía un problema de calibración entre el contacto detectado y las coordenadas transmitidas al software). ¿En qué momento la tecnología se hace "invisible"? Es decir, ¿en qué momento dejamos de ver un aparato hostil para ver una extensión de nuestras manos, ojos, oídos, etc.?
No pretendo tener una respuesta a la pregunta anterior, pero se me ocurrió que una forma de observar eso en una sociedad, en un momento determinado, era contar cuántas "manifestaciones culturales cotidianas" (canciones, poemas, refranes, cuentos, etc.) incluyen menciones explícitas a algún aparato específico. Por ejemplo: hay una canción reee-vieeeja que se llama "El teléfono llora", de Doménico Modugno, donde la historia que se cuenta depende obviamente de un teléfono. Una canción así no podría haber sido escrita antes de Graham Bell (tradicionalmente conocido como el inventor del teléfono), y probablemente tampoco durante muchos años luego de él. Pero hoy existe, y la canción no podría ser contada de igual manera sin el teléfono. Esto indica que el teléfono ha dejado de ser un "aparato raro" para formar parte de nuestra vida diaria. En otras palabras: has dejado de ver el teléfono como algo extraño; has asumido ese "trozo" de tecnología.
