Este programa es sobre cómo la industria discográfica se ha opuesto a cada avance tecnológico que ha hecho la música más abundante, y cómo ahora tiene dos opciones: adaptarse o morir.
And copyright industries have a choice. You either go with it, or you don't. We have a saying in Silicon Valley 'Don't fight the internet'. It does not make any sense to do that. What you should do, of course, is to figure out what people want and they give them what they want. It is the only way to make money, frankly. And the sin of copyright, and I think it has been a large and growing sin, is that it has provided the means by which some copyright owners can avoid doing that. And it is not helpful, it is not healthy, for them to do that. It is much better to adapt. || That is a hard thing to do, to adapt. Nobody wants to overthrow an existing business model, and go to something else. It is unfamiliar. And you may not make as much money. But that's just the way it is. || Dylan Thomas has this famous poem where he says "Rage, rage, against the dying of the light", but he died. We all will. And business will die too, if they don't actually adapt.
So the way I approach it is that these conflicts are ordinary, they are normal, and that innovation is a real threat, to everybody. And it should be a threat. That's what innovation is. When you hear politicians talk about innovation policy they say "we are pro-innovation". I have a hard time believing it. Because what they are really saying is that they want incremental change, that does not upset anybody. And any change you are going to make is a change that is going to alienate people. That's many people's view of innovation. I want innovation that makes my life better, but that doesn't change things. || That is not innovation. Innovation is inherently destructive. I understand why people don't want it, I don't want change in my own world, either. You get used to things. Maybe you worked really hard to get where you are, and you like where you are, and you are comfortable there. It is a good place for you to be. But you can't stay there forever.
